COVID-19: Mālama (caring for) our school

The Keaukaha School Foundation (Foundation) is observing government mandates and recommendations regarding coronavirus (COVID-19). For safety and good health, we encourage you to do the same - follow guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and appropriate government authorities.

The Foundation remains focused on helping our kumu (teachers) and haumāna (students) as students begin transitioning back to the classroom, and our stride in the past year (and despite the COVID-19 pandemic) speaks to our compassion, commitment, and credibility in responding to and supporting our School. With the concept of Healthy Air, Healthy Learning – introduced by long-term School supporter Richard Ha (Sustainable Energy Hawaii), the Foundation (supported by School administration) solicited funds from various grant sources and individual donors, and through various fundraising platforms to obtain air purifiers for all enclosed School campus spaces. In the rapid span of about three (3) months, the Foundation raised over $22,000 toward the air purifier effort and has since purchased 22 high-quality air purifiers for the School – an effort to support School safety measures for the eventual return of all haumāna to the campus. Our understanding is that our School is the first Department of Education public school on Hawaii Island to be fully equipped with air purifiers in every space through which haumāna circulate - added artillery in the fight to minimize COVID-19.

Our Purpose

The Keaukaha School Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to support and increase access to learning opportunities for the haumāna of Keaukaha Elementary School (in HIlo, Hawai‘i) to flourish, both in and out of the classroom. The Foundation has been operational for 20 years – seeking and providing grant and donor funding to support learning enrichment for our Keaukaha haumāna.

Our Credentials

Registered organization with GuideStar, the largest non-profit registry, which promotes organizational transparency. The Foundation is fortunate to have achieved Platinum recognition.

Registered organization with GreatNonprofits, the largest review platform for potential donors. The Foundation is fortunate to have achieved Top-Rated recognition.

Our Message

The Foundation is both humbled and honored to serve its school community by resourcing funding opportunities to provide the haumāna (students) of Keaukaha Elementary School with an array of learning experiences. With more than 400 haumāna of limited financial means, coupled with a challenged school budget for outside learning activities, haumāna are unable to frequent field learning experiences like those of other schools that are well-resourced. The Foundation seeks your support in providing critical learning opportunities for the haumāna of Keaukaha Elementary School.

Mahalo (Thank you) for visiting our site, and we look forward to your partnership and support!
